Ankle Replacements

Ankle replacement, also known as total ankle arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the damaged bones and cartilage in the ankle joint with prosthetic components. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with severe arthritis or significant ankle joint damage that causes chronic pain and limits mobility. Ankle replacement aims to relieve pain, improve joint function, and restore the patient’s ability to perform daily activities.

During the surgery, the damaged parts of the tibia (shinbone) and talus (ankle bone) are removed and replaced with metal and plastic implants that mimic the natural movement of the ankle. These implants are designed to provide a smooth, pain-free range of motion.

Causes for Ankle Replacement

  • Osteoarthritis: Degenerative joint disease causing the breakdown of cartilage in the ankle.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune condition that leads to chronic inflammation and joint damage.
  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis: Arthritis that develops after an injury to the ankle, such as fractures or severe sprains.
  • Failed Previous Treatments: Ineffectiveness of conservative treatments, such as medications, physical therapy, or bracing, in managing symptoms.
  • Chronic Pain and Mobility Issues: Persistent pain and limited range of motion affecting the patient’s quality of life and ability to perform daily activities.
