Bankart Repair

Bankart repair is a surgical procedure designed to correct recurrent shoulder dislocations caused by a Bankart lesion. A Bankart lesion occurs when the labrum, the ring of cartilage that surrounds the socket of the shoulder joint, is torn due to a shoulder dislocation. This tear can cause instability in the shoulder, making it prone to repeated dislocations. Bankart repair surgery involves reattaching the torn labrum to the socket of the shoulder joint using sutures or anchors. The goal of the procedure is to restore stability to the shoulder, reduce the risk of future dislocations, and allow the patient to return to normal activities.

Causes for Bankart Repair

  • Trauma: Initial shoulder dislocations often result from a fall, sports injury, or other trauma, leading to a Bankart lesion.
  • Recurrent Shoulder Dislocations: Frequent shoulder dislocations due to the instability caused by a torn labrum.
  • Chronic Shoulder Instability: Persistent feelings of shoulder instability or "giving way" during activities.
  • Failed Non-Surgical Treatments: Ineffectiveness of physical therapy, bracing, or other conservative treatments in preventing shoulder dislocations.
  • Sports Injuries: Athletes, especially those in contact or overhead sports, are more susceptible to shoulder dislocations and may require surgical intervention.
