Rotator Cuff Repair

Rotator cuff repair is a surgical procedure aimed at fixing a torn rotator cuff in the shoulder. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder and allow for its wide range of motion. Tears in the rotator cuff can result from acute injuries, such as falls, or degenerative changes due to aging and repetitive overhead activities. Symptoms of a torn rotator cuff include shoulder pain, weakness, and limited range of motion. During rotator cuff repair surgery, the surgeon reattaches the torn tendon to the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) using sutures or anchors. The goal of the surgery is to restore function, relieve pain, and improve the strength and mobility of the shoulder.

Causes for Rotator Cuff Repair

  • Acute Injuries: Sudden trauma, such as a fall or lifting heavy objects, leading to a rotator cuff tear.
  • Degenerative Changes: Wear and tear over time, often due to aging, resulting in a degenerative tear.
  • Repetitive Motion: Overuse from repetitive overhead activities or sports, such as tennis or baseball, can cause rotator cuff injuries.
  • Chronic Tendonitis: Long-term inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons, leading to weakening and eventual tearing.
  • Failed Non-Surgical Treatments: Ineffectiveness of physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, or other conservative treatments in alleviating symptoms.
